You entered your birth date, the clock time your mother remembers, and the name of the town — and a complete chart appeared on screen. Most people never ask what happened in that second. The honest answer is worth knowing, because it tells you exactly which parts of what you see are measured and which parts are interpreted. This page walks the whole pipeline, step by step.
Two layers, kept deliberately apart
Every NativeAstro reading has two layers, and the product is built so they never blur together.
Layer one is calculation — pure astronomy and classical rules, done by code that is identical for every user on every machine. Give the same birth data to the engine twice and you get the same chart twice. This layer is the free Chart Preview, and it is free precisely because it is deterministic: there is no personalization to sell in a number.
Layer two is interpretation — the reading itself, written in plain language from those numbers. The system behind the system is the Parāśara Hora Śāstra, and this layer is where judgment, tone, and context enter. That is what you pay for, and it is honest to say so plainly.
Step one: the place becomes coordinates
Before any astronomy, the birth place has to become a point on the globe: latitude, longitude, and a time zone. The engine geocodes the place you type against an open geographic database and converts the local birth time to the exact UTC instant — because the sky does not care what your wall clock says.
If the place cannot be resolved — a tiny village with no entry, or a misspelled name — the engine flags it and falls back to default coordinates rather than silently guessing. That is why the preview shows a note when the lookup fails, and why typing "city, country" instead of a bare city name gives noticeably more exact results.
Step two: the sky is looked up, not guessed
The UTC instant is converted to a Julian Day, and the planet positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris — the same professional-grade astronomical library used by working astrologers worldwide, built on NASA planetary data. It returns the tropical longitude of each body at that exact moment, plus its motion, which is how the engine knows a planet is retrograde.
The chart is sidereal, not tropical, so the engine then applies the Pushya Paksha Ayanamsha — the precession offset anchored to the fixed star δ Cancri (the nakshatra Pushya). Subtract that offset from the tropical longitudes and you get the sidereal positions of the nine planets: the seven classical grahas plus Rahu (the Moon's mean ascending node) and Ketu, always opposite it. Step three: the wheel is drawn
With positions in hand, the engine computes the Ascendant — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the birth moment, which requires your exact latitude, longitude, and time — and lays out whole-sign houses, one sign per house. It then works through the classical furniture of the chart:
- Panchanga — the five-limbed calendar: tithi, vara, the Moon's nakshatra, yoga, and karana for the moment
- Dignity — each planet's sign, exaltation, debilitation, and friendship status
- Aspects — the Parāśara gaze rules between planets
- Special lagnas — the classical alternate ascendants (upapada and the rest)
Step four: the deeper layers
The birth chart is one layer of a stack. The engine also computes the five vargas the system actually uses — divisional charts for health, children, marriage, career, and parents — and the Vimśottarī Daśā timing system: the 120-year sequence of planetary periods that starts from the Moon's nakshatra, drilled down to the mahādaśā, antar-daśā, and pratyantar-daśā you are living through right now. Finally, the engine applies the classical combination rules — raja yogas, dhana yogas, and the rest — and reports which ones the birth data actually satisfies, and which it does not.
Step five: the reading
All of that data — positions, houses, vargas, dashas, detected yogas, plus whatever context you shared — is compiled into a structured prompt and handed to a language model with strict instructions: ground every statement in the data, admit uncertainty, avoid hype, and end with concrete takeaways. The model never does astronomy; it only reads the numbers the engine produced.
That boundary is the whole design. The math is deterministic and auditable — any developer can run the same code and reproduce your chart exactly. The interpretation is a crafted reading of that math, which is what a chart has always been: a map, drawn precisely, and then a person's honest attempt to walk you through it.
Where uncertainty lives
Three honest caveats, each of which the product surfaces rather than hides:
- Unknown birth time — no Ascendant, no houses, no daśā timing. The nine planets still calculate. The preview tells you this directly.
- Unresolved place — flagged with a visible note, default coordinates used.
- Ayanamsha and house system — real classical choices with defensible reasoning, documented rather than hidden.
How to Find This in Your Chart
- Type your birth place as city + country and pick the autocomplete suggestion so coordinates resolve exactly.
- Include the birth time whenever you have it — without it you lose houses, the Ascendant, and daśā timing.
- Open the free Chart Preview and click any placement — every one links to an article explaining that piece of the chart.
- Recalculate the same birth data twice; the numbers will not change, because the calculation is deterministic.
- Read the report as what it is: a grounded interpretation of those numbers, not a prediction written in stone.
