You have your birth chart, and you have learned to read it: planets in signs, houses, the rising sign. Now the tradition asks you to look again — because the chart you have been reading is only the first layer. Beneath it sit the divisional charts, the vargas, which zoom into each area of life with a different lens.
Think of the difference between a map of a country and a map of one city. Both are accurate; one shows the whole journey, the other shows the streets. Your birth chart is the country; the vargas are the cities.
What a Varga Is
A varga is a re-division of the zodiac. Each sign spans 30 degrees, and the tradition divides those 30 degrees into smaller equal parts — 6, 7, 9, 10, or 12 of them, depending on the chart. Every planet, wherever it sits, is then re-plotted by its exact degree into one of those parts. The result is a whole new chart: same planets, same sky, sharper focus.
The scheme comes from Parāśara, the root text of this system, which describes the full set of sixteen vargas — the shodashavarga. In practice, a reader uses a handful of core ones, and the ones NativeAstro computes and includes in every report are five: D6, D7, D9, D10, and D12.
The Five Layers in Brief
Each varga has its own domain, tied to a house of the birth chart:

How the Layers Stack
The tradition reads the birth chart as the whole, then dips into a varga when a specific question arises. Marriage questions go to the D9; career to the D10; children to the D7; health to the D6; parents to the D12. Each varga gives the same planets a new set of signs and houses, and the reading is done with the same rules you already know.
Two planets can sit in the same sign in the birth chart and land in different signs in the D9 — that difference is exactly what separates two people born an hour apart. The vargas are where the chart stops being general and starts being yours.
Why the Birth Chart Is Not Enough
The birth chart shows the whole life in one frame. It cannot zoom. Two people can share nearly identical charts — same planets, same signs, same houses — and live visibly different lives. The vargas explain how: the differences show up in the layers, not the frame.
Parāśara makes the point sharply: a planet that is weak in the birth chart but strong in its vargas performs far better than its first-layer placement suggests — and the reverse. The D9 in particular is treated as the final word on strength, which is why the Navamsha gets the most attention of the five.
The Full Sixteen
The tradition's complete scheme is the shodashavarga — sixteen vargas, each with its own domain: D1 the body and the whole life, D2 wealth, D3 siblings and courage, D4 home and property, D7 children, D9 marriage, D10 career, D12 parents, D16 vehicles and comforts, D20 worship, D24 learning, D27 strength, D30 misfortune, D40 and D45 the finer karmic layers, and D60 past lives.
A full reading can draw on all of them, but in practice the core set does the daily work — and NativeAstro's reports compute exactly the five that matter most: D6 health, D7 children, D9 marriage, D10 career, and D12 parents. The other eleven exist in the tradition; these five are the ones your chart actually lives in.
The Varga Math
The mechanism is mechanical and exact. Take a planet at, say, 18 degrees of Aries. Aries spans 0 to 30 degrees; divide it into nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes, and the 18th degree lands in the sixth part — which is the sixth sign from Aries, Virgo. That is the planet's Navamsha sign. Repeat for every planet, with the number of parts matching the varga, and the whole chart re-forms.
The same degree can therefore land in very different signs in different vargas — which is exactly why two charts that look alike in the first layer can diverge completely in the layers beneath.
