The Arudha Lagna: How the World Sees You

The Arudha Lagna (A1) is the reflected image of your first house — your public persona, your reputation, and what sustains it. Here is how the chart is built and read.

4 min read

Two people can share the same Ascendant and be experienced by the world in completely different ways. One is taken seriously on sight; the other has to earn it. The chart that explains that difference is the Arudha Lagna.

The Arudha Lagna (AL) is A1 — the Arudha Pada of the first house. Where your rāśi Lagna is the body and temperament you were born with, the Arudha Lagna is the mask the world hands back to you: the reputation, the social identity, the image that walks into a room before you do.

Building the Arudha Lagna Chart

To read it, a single pada becomes a whole chart. Take the sign of A1 as the new Ascendant; the 2nd house is simply the next sign, the 3rd the next, and so on in zodiacal order. Then place the planets in their original signs and read them relative to this new frame.

That is one derived chart — not twelve. It answers one question well: what is the public story of this life, and what holds it up?

What the Houses from AL Show

Read the houses from the Arudha Lagna the way you read any chart, but with the meanings shifted toward the public and the social:

House from ALShows
1styour public persona — how you are introduced
2ndwhat sustains your image (and what it costs)
4thyour public home and domestic image
7thyour public partnership image
9thyour public dharma — the beliefs attributed to you
10thyour career and status image
11thyour gains and network image
12thyour losses and spiritual image

The 2nd from AL is especially useful: it shows the resources your reputation actually rests on. A benefic there supports a lasting image; a malefic can mean the image is held up by effort, secrecy, or something that must be constantly fed.

An Example

Take a Scorpio Ascendant whose A1 falls in Cancer. The Arudha Lagna chart is then counted from Cancer: the 2nd from AL is Leo, the 7th Capricorn, the 10th Aries. If the Moon sits in Cancer (the 1st from AL), the public reads the native as nurturing, emotional, protective. If Jupiter is in Leo (2nd from AL), the reputation is sustained by wisdom and teaching. If the Sun, Mercury, and Venus cluster in Aries (10th from AL), the career image is authoritative, communicative, and creative — regardless of what the actual 10th house holds.

That contrast is the point. The actual 10th house is the work; the 10th from AL is the standing.

Reading It Honestly

The Arudha Lagna is not a more important chart than the rāśi — it is a different question. The rāśi says who you are. The Arudha Lagna says who you are taken to be. Both are real; neither replaces the other.

When they agree, life tends to feel coherent: you are seen roughly as you are. When they diverge — a private nature with a very public image, or a substantial life that stays invisible — the reading should say so, because that gap is usually where the person's central frustration, or their central gift, lives.

How to Find This in Your Chart

  1. Find your A1 sign in your report's Jaimini section — that is your Arudha Lagna.
  2. Note which planets sit in it and in the houses from it, especially the 2nd (what sustains the image) and the 10th (the career image).
  3. Hold it next to your actual Ascendant and 10th house. Where the two tell the same story, trust it; where they differ, that tension is the reading.
