What Debilitation Is

Every planet has a sign where it is most uncomfortable — the classical texts call this neecha, debilitation. The Sun is debilitated at 10° Libra, the Moon at 3° Scorpio, Mars at 28° Cancer, Mercury at 15° Pisces, Jupiter at 5° Capricorn, Venus at 27° Virgo, and Saturn at 20° Aries. In that sign, the planet's natural expression runs against the grain of its environment, and its results are described as weak, hidden, or delayed.

The classical tradition is careful here: debilitation is not doom. It is a placement of humility and depth — the planet works hard for what it gives, and it gives lessons that easy placements never teach. The debilitated planet is the one that makes you grow.

What Cancels the Debilitation

Neecha Bhanga — the cancellation of debilitation — fires when specific conditions appear in the chart. The classical rules are precise:

• The lord of the debilitation sign is exalted. The Sun is debilitated in Libra, whose lord is Venus; if Venus is exalted in Pisces, the Sun's debilitation is cancelled.
• The lord of the debilitation sign is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house) from the ascendant or the Moon.
• The debilitated planet itself is in a kendra from the ascendant or the Moon.
• The debilitated planet is in the navamsha (D9) of its exaltation sign. The D9 is the divisional chart of the deeper self; a debilitated planet re-plotted into its exaltation there is, classically, redeemed.
• The lord of the debilitation sign is in a kendra from the debilitated planet itself.

One condition can be enough; two or more make the cancellation decisive. The classical image is of a wrestler who has been pinned — and then the referee's hand comes down, the pin is broken, and the wrestler rises.

Why It Becomes a Raja Yoga

When the debilitation is cancelled, the planet does not just recover — it overcompensates. The classical texts call the result raja yoga: a combination of kingship. The redeemed planet behaves like the most powerful planet in the chart, and it delivers what debilitation seemed to deny — status, authority, wealth, or mastery — often because of the depth the debilitation built.

A debilitated planet in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house — the classical houses of struggle — often produces a quieter but more workable weakness: the daily grind, the hidden battle, the slow transformation. A debilitated planet in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or in the trinal houses (1st, 5th, 9th) is more visible, and its redemption is more spectacular.

There is a classical caution worth knowing: a debilitated planet that is also a house lord carries double weight.
