The Puṣya Pakṣa Ayanāṃśa anchors the sidereal zodiac to the star Puṣya (δ Cancri), the southern star of the constellation Cancer, which sits within the lunar mansion that shares its name. We calibrate the zodiac so that this star sits at exactly 16°00′ Cancer.
This is not an arbitrary choice. The classical texts of Jyotiṣa — particularly the Surya Siddhanta, the foundational astronomical treatise that Indian astrologers followed for centuries — consistently place the star Puṣya at this exact degree along the ecliptic. This is the traditional zero-point of the sidereal frame, preserved in the lineage of paramparā (oral tradition) and verified by generations of practitioners.
In contrast, the Lahiri ayanamsha anchors to Spica (Chitra) at 0° Libra — a choice made for calendar convenience, not chart accuracy. Modern satellite data (Gaia) shows Spica has proper motion and no longer sits exactly where the Lahiri formula assumes. The Puṣya anchor, by contrast, is fixed, observable, and verifiable with a telescope at any moment.
The Mathematical Reality: Verifiable, Not Approximated
Here is the critical distinction between Pushya Paksha and the mainstream defaults:
- Lahiri, Raman, Krishnamurti, and most others use a linear formula — a fixed precession rate calculated from a specific historical epoch. This was designed for an era without computers, so that almanac-makers could calculate positions by hand. It is an approximation that slowly drifts from observable reality.
- Puṣya Pakṣa uses the actual, real-time position of a fixed star (δ Cancri). There is no formula. There is no epoch. There is no approximation. You point a telescope at the star, read its ecliptic longitude, and subtract that value from the tropical frame. It is measurement, not calculation.
This is not a philosophical preference—it is a methodological difference between guessing and observing. When your chart says a planet is in a particular sign with Pushya Paksha, that placement is mathematically tied to a photon of light arriving from a real star at that exact moment.
What This Means for Your Chart
The practical stakes are highest for fast-moving placements and for anything near a boundary.
- The Moon is the placement most likely to be affected, because it moves fast (about 13° per day) and sits near sign boundaries more often than the slow planets.
- Divisional charts (varga) — particularly the D-9 Navamsha, used for marriage and dharma — are exponentially more sensitive. A 1° shift in the main chart becomes a 9° shift in the D-9. An anchor that is even slightly off cascades into major interpretive errors in the finer charts.

A chart anchored to a real, verifiable star is objectively superior to one anchored to a linear approximation from a 1950s calendar committee.

- Your birth chart lists the ayanamsha used for your calculations — check that it is the Puṣya Pakṣa Ayanāṃśa.
- Compare a planet near a sign boundary with another app: if the sign differs, the ayanamsha is why.
- If you were born when the Moon was within a couple of degrees of a sign change, your Moon sign is the placement most likely to shift between systems — worth knowing, because the Moon colors your emotional life.
- With the Puṣya Pakṣa Ayanāṃśa, the answer is always the same: the sky as it actually was — measured, not approximated.
The bottom line is simple: the ayanamsha is not a matter of opinion but of measurement. The Puṣya Pakṣa value is chosen because it can be verified — point at the star, read the degree, and any telescope confirms the anchor. When a reading matters, the calibration behind it should be exactly that transparent.
