Longevity: The Eighth House, the Marakas and Saturn, Read Backwards

For a life the record has already ended, classical longevity reading weighs the eighth house, its lord, the maraka houses and Saturn. NativeAstro computes those factors and states the lived span — and never prints a predicted date. Here is what that page is, and why.

A reading for a person who has died has a question the living never ask: what does the chart say about the end? The tradition answers it, and the answer is not a number of years. It is a family of factors — the eighth house, the two houses called maraka, and Saturn — read together, and read in one direction only: backwards, from a life whose length the record already fixes.

NativeAstro prints those factors on a page called Longevity · read retrospectively. It is the one page in a report that describes something already finished, and it is built to be read that way.

What Classical Longevity Reading Is

The eighth house is the house of endings, of what is hidden, and of the long arc. Its lord carries the same meaning at one remove, and where that lord sits — which house, in what dignity — is the first thing a classical reader weighs. Saturn is the natural significator of longevity: slow, durable, and exacting, the planet that measures how long a thing lasts.

The two maraka houses, the second and the seventh, and the lords of those houses, are the second layer. Maraka means "death-inflicting", and the classical literature watches those lords closely. Read them as themes of fragility rather than as a mechanism: the second house is nourishment, family and what sustains you; the seventh is partnership and openness to the other. Where the life was supported or exposed shows up here.

None of this is destiny in a date. It is a reading of what a life was built on and what it closed on.

The Factors the Report Computes

The page carries one row per factor, and every value in it is computed by the engine rather than estimated by a model:

  • Lived span — the length of the life on record, in years, months and days, counted from the recorded birth and end dates.
  • 8th house · the house of the end — the sign on the eighth house, the lord that rules it, the house that lord occupies and its dignity, and any planets sitting in the eighth.
  • Maraka houses · 2 and 7 — the lords of the second and seventh houses, named so the reader can find them in the Planetary positions table.
  • Saturn · natural longevity — Saturn's sign, its house, its dignity, and the houses it rules.

There is deliberately no prose on the page. Everything a reader needs to interpret those rows lives here in the Learn hub — that is the rule the Calculations section follows for every table it prints.

Why There Is No Predicted Date

The classical tradition does have systems that attempt to compute a lifespan in years: Piṇḍāyu, Aṃśāyu, Naisargikāyu and the "bracket" methods that place a life into a long, medium or short band. NativeAstro does not print a date from them, and the reasons are worth stating plainly.

First, the systems disagree with one another. Run two of them on the same chart and they will not hand you the same number; a reader who wants a date can find one, but which one depends on the method rather than on the chart.

Second, they are acutely sensitive to the birth time — often to the minute. The product's own precision rules say what a recorded clock is worth, and a technique that needs a certainty we do not have cannot honestly print a figure.

Third, the classical authors themselves treat the longevity chapter as deliberately obscure. Several of them say so outright. Where the tradition is reluctant, a modern product has no business being confident.

So the bracket methods sit in the same place as Pranapada — held back until one construction can be pinned to a single authority, rather than shipped as a guess.

What the Factors Are For

If the page does not predict an end, what does it do? It lets a reading of a completed life be specific about its shape.

The eighth house tells the reading what themes the life closed on — the long arc, the inherited thread, what was hidden and what came to light. The maraka lords say where the life was strong and where it was exposed. Saturn says how the life was built: what was carried slowly, what was earned rather than received. Set beside the lived span, those rows give the closing chapter of a reading something concrete to stand on, instead of a vague gesture toward "later life".

The reading is told to use those factors exactly that way — to weigh the arc, never the event — and it is forbidden to narrate how a life ended, name a cause, or treat the ending as foreshadowed. The row is data. It is not a story about dying.

For a Living Subject

This layer is absent for a living subject, and that absence is deliberate rather than an oversight. The eighth house, Saturn and the lord of the eighth still matter in a living chart — they are read inside the health and inherited-thread themes — but a "lived span" cannot exist while the life is running, and printing a predicted one would be exactly the false precision this product refuses.

So the page simply does not appear. No section, no row, no note saying it was withheld.

How to Find This in Your Chart

  1. The factors reach a report only for a subject whose record includes an end date — enter it with the life status when you build the profile.
  2. The lived span is stated on the reading's opening summary (Recorded life span …). The Calculations record prints no Longevity page of its own: its rows are the positions table's own values, and a record does not restate itself.
  3. Find the eighth house: its sign on the Birth chart (D1), and the condition of its lord in Planetary positions.
  4. Look up the two maraka lords — the rulers of the second and seventh houses — in the same positions table, and note the houses they rule.
  5. Finish with Saturn — its sign, its dignity, and the houses it rules — and hold the factors together as one shape.
